Winterhawks roll past Lancers for 14th-straight win

The Saugeen Shores Winterhawks didn’t exactly roll out the welcome mat for the Lucknow Lancers on Friday night.

The Lucknow side had to brave a snowy night to get to the Plex and the first place Winterhawks laid a 10-1 thumping on their guests.

Michael Johnstone opened the scoring for the Hawks with his third of the season as he fired a wrist shot that goalie Ben Dorscht got a piece of but couldn’t squeeze.

Curtis Johnston collected the first of his three goals on the night as he deflected a point shot from Theo Peckham for a power play marker and the 200th point of his career.

Brendon Haefling scored just 35 seconds later on the same power play to make it 3-0.

Johnston collected his second of the night on a pretty three-way passing play with linemates Bryan Kazarian and Trent Hawke. Johnston finished it with a great backhand move to beat Dorscht.

Brent MacDermid fired one high into the Lancers net from a sharp angle to make it 5-0 with assists from linemates Blake Underwood and Jeff MacDermid. The assist was Blake Underwood’s 200th career point as well.

The second period saw more of the same as Johnston batted home a rebound to collect the hat trick.

Lucknow’s Shawn Moore got the Lancers on the board midway through the second with a power play goal that was the only blemish on an otherwise perfect night for Winterhawks goalie Jeff Flagler who holds the best goals against record in the WOAA at 1.50.

Andy Mitchell roofed a backhander past Dorscht to make it 7-1 followed by a Blake Underwood goal late in the second.

Theo Peckham scored his fourth of the season early in the third and Jeff MacDermid rounded out the scoring with his third goal in four games.

The Hawks hope to carry their momentum into Saturday night as they play host to the second place Mapleton Minto 81s, with a 7:30 p.m. start at The Plex.
