Winterhawks return home looking to clinch 1st place

With two games remaining in the 2016/17 regular season, the Saugeen Shores Winterhawks are looking to firm up their spot in the playoffs.

The Winterhawks sit atop the WOAA Sr. Hockey League at 16-1-1 and have clinched a playoff spot and home ice advantage through two rounds of the playoffs.

However, there’s still one more task left on the list in the regular season – 1st overall. The Winterhawks are currently five points ahead of 2nd place Mapleton-Minto, who have three games remaining.

The scenario is pretty simple for the Winterhawks, they need to win either of their remaining games, or have Mapleton-Minto lose a game and they will clinch 1st overall, a date with the 8th-seeded team in the 1st round and home ice advantage for the duration of the playoffs.

The Winterhawks will have a chance to take care of business themselves with a win against potential 1st round opponent, the Ripley Wolves, on Friday at The Plex. Mapleton-Minto hosts Tillsonburg on Friday in Palmerston.

The Wolves are fighting for a playoff spot in a jam-packed race, just two points separate the 4th place Clinton Radars and the Tavistock Royals and Tillsonburg Thunder, who are tied for 7th. The Huron East Centenaires are currently on the outside looking in, four points back of Tavistock and Tillsonburg, but have games in hand on both teams.

Ripley sits in a tie for 5th place with the Durham Thundercats and will surely be looking to upset the Winterhawks to solidify their spot in the playoffs.

The Wolves lineup features young talent such as the “Kid Line” of Brett Catto, Drew Davidson and Cody Britton, as well as hardened veterans like former Winterhawks stalwart, Ryan Dudgeon.

In goal, the combination of sophomore Mitch Campbell and veteran Kurt Edwards keeps Ripley in every game.

The game on Friday is being sponsored by Boston Pizza Saugeen Shores, who are providing a special offer for Winterhawks fans for the remainder of the season.
