The Saugeen Shores Winterhawks secured first place overall in the WOAA with a 6-2 win in Port Elgin on Friday night.
Jeff MacDermid opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal five minutes into the first period.
The Winterhawks extended their lead to 2-0 when Brendon Haefling pounced on a loose puck and shoveled it past Ripley goaltender Kurt Edwards.
With 15 seconds to go in the first, Edwards came way out of his net to play the puck and tried to clear it but Mike Johnstone picked it out of the air and then deposited it into a wide open net for a 3-0 lead.
Theo Peckham made it 4-0 when he bulldozed his way to the Ripley net and shoveled it past Edwards midway through the second.
Devin Kemp responded for the Wolves in the third as Winterhawks goaltender Jeff Flagler was caught straying from his net.
Alex Kuntz responded for the Winterhawks two minutes later to make it 5-1. Bryan Kazarian’s assist on the goal made it 14 straight games with a point for the veteran centreman.
Drew Davidson beat Flagler with a low shot to the blocker side late in the third but Blake Underwood responded with five minutes remaining to round out the scoring.
The Winterhawks (17-1-1) will now wait for the dust to settle in the standings and will face the 8th-place team in the 1st round of the playoffs, which is tentatively scheduled to begin on Feb. 3rd.
In the meantime, the Winterhawks have one game regular season remaining next Friday night in Port Elgin versus the Durham Thundercats at 8:30 p.m.
