Winterhawks & Radars coming down to the wire

It was never expected to be quick or easy.

The W.O.A.A. semi-final series between the number-one ranked Saugeen Shores Winterhawks and defending champion Clinton Radars will reach its conclusion this weekend, potentially with three games in three days.

The best-of-seven series is tied 2-2, with Game 5 set to go on Friday night in Port Elgin at 8:30 p.m., with Game 6 the following night in Clinton, also at 8:30 p.m.

While the two clubs were largely unfamiliar with each other heading into the series, the inevitable bad blood that builds over the course of a hotly-contested playoff series started to become evident during last Saturday’s Game 4 in Clinton.

The game featured three game misconducts, with the Winterhawks taking two and Clinton one, as well as a match penalty.

The Winterhawks did not face any supplemental discipline, while Clinton’s Tyler Bryson will serve a suspension for an attempt-to-injure match penalty, when he kicked the feet out from under Winterhawks forward Jeff MacDermid late in the 2nd period.

Home ice has been a true advantage in this series, with both teams feeding off home crowds of 1,000 people each game, as evidenced by the home team taking victory in every game so far.

In an evenly-matched series, that factor may be something that tilts the scales in the Winterhawks favour, as they would have a series-deciding Game 7, if required, on home ice on Sunday afternoon at The Plex (3:30 p.m. start)

Remaining series schedule:

Date Time Location
Game 5 Friday March 10th 8:30 p.m. Port Elgin
Game 6 Saturday March 11h 8:30 p.m. Clinton
*Game 7 Sunday March 12th 3:30 p.m. Port Elgin
* – if necessary

The other semi-final will also go at least six games as well, as the Mapleton-Minto 81’s and Petrolia Squires are tied 2-2 in their series, with the road team taking victory in every game so far.
