The battle for the final “AA” playoff spots appears to be coming down to the final games of the season.
After Mother Nature wiped out their game on Jan. 5th in Clinton (make-up game details below), the Saugeen Shores Winterhawks watched from the sidelines on the weekend, keeping an eye on their competition.
When the dust settled, the Winterhawks maintained their slim grip on the 8th-and-final playoff spot, as the Huron East Centenaries dropped their lone game on the weekend, a 10-3 blowout loss to the Durham Thundercats on Jan. 5th.
The Winterhawks received more help from their rivals from Durham the following night, when the Thundercats defeated the Shallow Lake Crushers 5-2 in Lion’s Head to keep the 7th-place Crushers just one point ahead of the Winterhawks.
The Milverton Four Wheel Drives pushed their way into the playoff discussion with a 5-1 win over the Lucknow Lancers on Jan. 6th, upping their total to 12 points, one back of the Winterhawks and Huron East.
The Drives missed out on their chance to jump into 7th place on Jan. 7th, when they dropped an 8-5 decision to the Tavistock Royals, to sit at 6-8-0 with six games remaining.
The Winterhawks will be back on the ice Friday night at home, hosting the Elora Rocks for an 8:30 p.m. start, sponsored by Bruce Telecom.
The scoreboard watching will be in effect, as the Winterhawks will again look for help from the Thundercats, who will be visiting Milverton.
The Winterhawks will be off the following night, January 13th, but will have an eye on a few games, as the Clinton Radars host Huron East and Milverton hosts the Petrolia Squires, who sit in 6th place at 16 points. They still have an outside shot of catching the 5th-place Shelburne Muskies, who will be visiting Lucknow.
Rescheduled: The Winterhawks and Clinton Radars have rescheduled their postponed game to Sunday January 28th at 5:00 p.m. in Clinton.
