MacDermid paces Winterhawks to win in Shallow Lake

The Saugeen Shores Winterhawks have picked a good time to go on a winning streak.

Brent MacDermid scored three times on Saturday night in Shallow Lake to lead the Winterhawks to an 8-2 win over the Shallow Lake Crushers, their third-straight win.

MacDermid opened the scoring early when he broke in between two Shallow Lake defenders and snapped a shot past Crushers netminder Jerred Kiss, making it 1-0 at 5:24.

The Winterhawks killed off a penalty, then MacDermid was sprung on a breakaway by Lauchlin Elder, and he deked out Kiss to make it 2-0 Winterhawks, which is where things stood after 20 minutes.

The Winterhawks jumped out again quickly to open the second period, as Chris Minard got in alone on Kiss and tucked the puck under Kiss to make it 3-0 just 54-seconds into the frame.

Mike Smailes picked up his first of three points on the night when he got loose in the slot and snapped the puck into the top corner to make it 4-0 Winterhawks at 4:10, with assists to Chris King and James McHaig.

MacDermid capped off the hat-trick at 7:43 of the second, ripping a shot past Kiss, ending the night of the Shallow Lake goaltender.

Shallow Lake would get one back two minutes later when Brady Houston beat Jeff Flagler to make it 5-1.

The Winterhawks power play again went to work late in the period, with Trent Hawke deflecting a Minard one-timer past Crushers back-up Kyle Sephton at 19:03, giving the Winterhawks a 6-1 lead after two periods.

Once again, the Winterhawks opened the period with determination, as James McHaig stepped into the slot at 5:56 and snapped a shot past the blocker of Sephton to make it 7-1.

Shallow Lake would get it back, but Hawke would wrap up the scoring on a breakaway, with assists to Minard and Flagler to arrive at an 8-2 final.

Flagler made 20 saves to go along with his assist for the win in goal.

The win moves the Winterhawks into 6th place in the WOAA Sr. Hockey League standings, one point back of the 5th place Shelburne Muskies, and one point ahead of the Milverton Four Wheel Drives, with one weekend left to play in the regular season.

It sets the stage for a pivotal showdown at  The Plex on Saturday January 28th, when Milverton comes to town for the first-ever match-up between the two teams.

Game time is 7:30 p.m.
