Winterhawks rout Milverton
Matt Shields and Jordan Vanhaelemeesch each scored twice as the Saugeen Shores Winterhawks cruised to a 7-1 win on Sunday afternoon in Milverton.
Mike Johnstone opened the scoring on the power play, making it 1-0 Hawks at 5:52 of the first period, with Miles MacLean and Brock Pinnell assisting.
The Hawks ended up in some penalty trouble late in the opening frame, with Milverton picking up two five-on-three advantages in short succession, but the Winterhawks killed it off with starting goalie Jeff Flagler coming up big.
Milverton was able to even up the score late in the period to make it a 1-1 game after one period.
The Winterhawks came out flying in the second period and put the game away with authority.
Shields notched his first of the game at 1:26 of the second, assisted by MacLean and Johnstone to restore the Winterhawks lead.
Andy Mitchell extended the lead to 3-1 at 11:10, assisted by Johnstone.
Shields made it 4-1 at 14:16, with Mitchell adding the assist, then Vanhaelemeesch made it a 5-1 game just over a minute later, with Mike Fiegehen and Josh Deyell picking up assists.
The Winterhawks killed off another Milverton five-on-three advantage late in the second period to keep it a 5-1 game after 40 minutes.
The rout continued in the 3rd, as Vanhaelemeesch made it 6-1 at 5:49 of the 3rd, and Fiegehen picked up his second assist of the afternoon.
MacLean rounded out the scoring on the power play at 7:30 of the 3rd, with assists to Deyell and Trent Hawke to make it a 7-1 final score.
Flagler picked up the win in goal for the victorious Winterhawks.
The Winterhawks (1-1-0) remain on the road next weekend, travelling to Petrolia on Friday night, October 28th, to face the 3-1-0 Squires at 8:30 p.m.
