Red Hot Winterhawks Dominate in Durham
The Saugeen Shores Winterhawks continued their dominant play on Saturday night with a 7-1 win over the Durham Thundercats.

The Durham arena was jam-packed for the Thundercats 50th anniversary celebrations, but the Winterhawks gave the large home crowd little to cheer about.

Lauchlin Elder opened the scoring 9:09 into the game, converting from Matt Shields and Miles MacLean.

Andy Mitchell made it a 2-0 game just a minute-and-a-half later, with Andy Fracz picking up the assist.

Fracz played the set-up man again just under two minutes later, when he assisted on Logan Freiburger's goal to make it a 3-0 Winterhawks lead, with three goals in just over three minutes.

Durham got one past Winterhawks netminder Jeff Flagler midway through the second period, but it was the only one Flagler would surrender on this night.

Jordan Vanhaelemeesch restored the three-goal lead at 15:29 of the second, from Curtis Johnston and Justin Donnelly.

Mitchell added his second of the game just over a minute later to blow the game wide open and make it a 5-1 Winterhawks lead after two periods. Mike Fiegehen and Medric Mercier picked up assists on the goal.

A change in goal to start the third period did little to change Durham's fortunes, as the Winterhawks made it 6-1 on the power play early in the third period on a goal by Johnston, with assists to Elder and MacLean.

MacLean rounded out the scoring late in the game to make it a 7-1 victory for the Winterhawks, who thoroughly dominated Durham, outshooting the Thundercats 42-19.

The Winterhawks have now won five games in a row and eight of their last nine games overall. They sit fourth in the WOAA standings with a record of 12-4-1, one point behind the Ripley Wolves with one game in hand on their Bruce County counterparts.

The Minto 81's are two points ahead of the Winterhawks in second place, however, the Winterhawks also have one game in-hand on Minto, and currently hold the tiebreaker on both Minto and Ripley.

The Winterhawks will be back in action on Friday night, January 20th when they host the Lucknow Lancers at the Southampton Coliseum at 8:30 p.m. The Winterhawks will play tribute to the Lakeshore Winterhawks with black & white Lakeshore retro jerseys.
