Hawks win 6th in a Row
The Saugeen Shores Winterhawks are flying high at the right time of year.

The Winterhawks controlled the play for the majority of the night, en route to a 5-2 win over the Creemore Coyotes on Friday night at The Plex.

Cam Lightfoot put the 'Hawks up 1-0 early on his first career Winterhawks goal when he got loose in the slot at 7:28 of the first, from Justin Marlowe and Kent Ribey.

Creemore answered back late in the period and the two teams were tied 1-1 after one.

It was Minor Hockey Night at the rink, with the Winterhawks offering a practice for the Saugeen Shores Storm team that showed the best team spirit.

As it turned out, we couldn't break a tie, and the Storm U9 Teal and U9 Girls C were named co-winners and will each receive a practice put on by Winterhawks players.

Once the action got back underway, Chad Jones put the Winterhawks up 2-1 midway through the second period with a blast from the point, with Luke Pither and Brent MacDermid assisting.

MacDermid added one of his own at 12:25 from Pither and Andy Fracz and the Winterhawks held a 3-1 lead after two periods.

Marlowe added to the lead early in the third when he took a nice feed from Captain Miles MacLean to make it 4-1 Winterhawks at 1:47, with Josh Urbshott also assisting.

Andy Mitchell made it 5-1 late in the third on a double-deflection from Mike Fiegehen and Jones, though Creemore added a flukey goal in the dying seconds to make it a 5-2 final score.

Clayton Fritsch was outstanding in the Winterhawks net, making 24 saves for the win, taking Wismer House Player of the Game honours.

The Winterhawks have won six games in a row to put themselves in solid positioning for the Ontario Elite Hockey League playoffs, with a huge test coming up.

The undefeated Ripley Wolves come to The Plex next Friday night, January 3rd, for an 8:30 p.m. start.

It's Front Line Workers Night, sponsored by Vanderwerf's Your Independent Grocer, who are covering admission for all front line workers, which includes police, firefighters, paramedics and health care workers.
