Tavistock Evens Series
The Saugeen Shores Winterhawks and Tavistock Royals are all even in their Ontario Elite Hockey League quarterfinal series.
Tavistock jumped out early on Saturday night, and never surrendered the lead, taking Game 2 by a 4-2 score.
Tavistock's Andrew van Boekel, ejected the night prior for checking from behind, scored twice 24-seconds apart to give Tavistock a 2-0 by the time the game was two minutes old.
Winterhawks captain Miles MacLean got one back two minutes later when he picked off an errant pass in the Tavistock zone and fired a shot past Royals goalie Zach Shomphe to cut the Royals lead to 2-1.
A short Winterhawks bench missing their ex-pros battled all night long, keeping the Royals at bay.
The Royals received ample power play time in the second period, and the Winterhawks penalty killers did an excellent job, until Tavistock snuck one through with one second left on the clock in the middle frame, giving the Royals a 3-1 lead after two.
Justin Marlowe cut the Royals lead to 3-2 at the eight-minute mark of the third, taking a centering feed from Matt Shields.
The Winterhawks fought to get the tying goal, but it was Tavistock who got the insurance marker with five minutes left, which was all they needed, hanging on from there for the 4-2 win.
With the series tied 1-1, it now shifts back to The Plex for Game 3 this Friday night, February 14th, for a Valentine's Day match-up at 8:30 p.m. Game sponsor is Georgian Family Dentistry.
