Winterhawks Win in Durham
While eyes across the country were squarely fixed on the baseball diamond on Saturday night, there was still some hockey to be played.

Unlike the Blue Jays, the Saugeen Shores Winterhawks took care of business, taking a 5-2 road victory over the Durham Thundercats.

The Winterhawks opened the scoring at 6:27, when Logan Freiburger took control in the Durham zone, feeding a pass to Mike Fiegehen at the top of the circle.

Fiegehen's shot was stopped, but Andy Mitchell was there for the rebound to give the Winterhawks a 1-0 lead.

Durham answered back in short order with two goals to take a 2-1 lead after one period.

A tight checking affair didn't produce additional offence until 13:19 of the second when the Winterhawks pounced on the power play.

Some nice passing work by the Winterhawks top power play unit resulted in Luke Pither getting open for a shot, and he fired a laser beam over the shoulder of the Durham goalie to tie the game at 2-2.

New Winterhawks defenceman Todd Hellyer and Miles MacLean added assists on the tying goal.

Rookie Trevor Donaldson put the Winterhawks ahead just over a minute later when he pounced on a Durham turnover and carried the puck into the Thundercats zone.

Donaldson fired a shot into the top corner for his first Winterhawks goal to give them a 3-2 lead, which carried into the third period.

The Winterhawks added to the lead in the opening minute of the third period, when Rob Flick carried the puck into the Durham zone.

His pass across was deflected away, but Pither picked it up off the boards and fired a quick shot on net. The rebound went right on to the stick of Flick, who made no mistake, putting the Winterhawks up 4-2.

Clayton Fritsch locked it down from there in the Winterhawks net, turning aside 11 shots in the third period to take the win, with MacLean adding an empty netter to make it a 5-2 final for the Winterhawks.

Fritsch made 28 saves for the win in goal.

The Winterhawks have now won four games in a row, sitting atop the Ontario Elite Hockey League's North Division with a record of 4-1-1.

They will be back home this Friday night, November 7th, when they host the Creemore Coyotes at The Plex at 8:30 p.m.
