Hawks Stay Hot
The Saugeen Shores Winterhawks picked up a pair of wins over the Creemore Coyotes to maintain their hold on first place.
The Winterhawks kicked off the home & home weekend series with Creemore on Friday night at The Plex, skating away with a convincing 8-1 win.
The Coyotes dressed only 10 skaters for the game, but hung in there early in spite of the short bench, content to play a neutral zone trap.
Brent MacDermid scored his first of five goals over the weekend to give the Winterhawks a 1-0 lead on the power play, but Creemore answered back before the end of the period and it was a 1-1 tie after one.
The short bench started to show in Creemore's game early in the second period, and the Winterhawks blew it open.
Justin Donnelly scored on the power play 25-seconds into the second, assisted by Miles MacLean and Todd Hellyer.
Mike Fiegehen made it 3-1 from Hellyer just three minutes later, followed by Donnelly's second of the game from Justin Marlowe and MacLean.
Donnelly completed the hat-trick late in the second period from Hellyer and MacLean and the rout was on, with the 'Hawks leading 5-1 after two.
With the Creemore 10 running on fumes by the third period, the Winterhawks continued to control the play, starting with Clayton Fitzsimmons scoring his first as a Winterhawk at 8:57, from MacLean and Spencer Sutter.
MacDermid added his second of the night from MacLean, then MacLean capped off the scoring on the power play at 12:23 to make it 8-1 Winterhawks.
That was enough for both teams, and it was largely uneventful from there with the Winterhawks taking the victory.
Donnelly was named the Wismer House Player of the Game with three goals and two assists, but it was also a notable game for MacLean, who scored a goal and added six assists to take over top spot in the Ontario Elite Hockey League's scoring race.
Eric Peicheff made 33 saves, including several big saves early on, to take the win in the Winterhawks net.
Less than 24 hours later on Saturday evening, the two teams met again in Creemore.
Although the Coyotes lineup was quite a big deeper at home, the results weren't much different, the Winterhawks jumping out early and cruising to a 7-3 victory.
The Winterhawks came flying out of the gate, with MacDermid opening the scoring from Trevor Donaldson at 2:31, then Keegan Angel's first goal of the season from Logan Freiburger and James McHaig just over a minute later.
MacLean continued his torrid scoring pace at 9:10 from Marlowe and Josh Urbshott to give the Winterhawks a 3-0 lead.
MacDermid added his second of the night late in the period from Mike Johnstone, though Creemore answered right back.
Still, the Winterhawks had a comfortable 4-1 lead after one.
Creemore crept closer midway through the second period with a power play goal, but MacDermid's hat-trick goal reestablished the three goal lead for the Winterhawks.
Cam Lightfoot assisted on MacDermid's goal to make it 5-2.
Donnelly ended any threat of a Creemore comeback by making it 6-2 early in the third period from MacLean, followed by Marlowe on the power play from Donaldson at 13:06 to give the Winterhawks a 7-2 lead.
Creemore added a goal of little consequence in the final minute to make it a 7-3 final.
Clayton Fritsch was excellent yet again, and picked up the win in the Winterhawks net.
The Winterhawks have now won six games in a row and continue to hold first place in the Ontario Elite Hockey League's first place with a record of 6-1-1.
They will be back on the road next weekend, travelling to Thornbury on Saturday night, November 15th, when they face the Georgian Bay Applekings at 7:00 p.m.
