Winterhawks Winning Ways Continue
It was a little too close for comfort at times, but the Saugeen Shores Winterhawks put another two points on the board.
The Winterhawks controlled the play for the majority of a 5-1 victory over the visiting Shelburne Muskies on Friday night at The Plex.
The game kicked off with a milestone goal for a Winterhawks stalwart, Curtis Johnson notching his 150th career goal 2:18 into the game, becoming only the second player in team history to reach that milestone.
The quick start continued as Justin Marlowe made it 2-1 at 5:07 of the first, from Luke Pither and Rob Flick, kicking off a big night for the Winterhawks top line.
Shelburne got one back in the final minute of the period off a botched break out attempt in the Winterhawks zone to cut the lead to 2-1 after one.
The Winterhawks had ample opportunities to blow the game open in the second period, picking up two power play opportunities, including a four-minute power play, but struggled to get set up and couldn't score.
Finally, the Winterhawks struck late in the period when Andy Mitchell got the puck down low near the Shelburne net and roofed the puck over the Muskies goalie to make it a 3-1 lead.
Flick added his first of two on the night as number 26 scored 26-seconds later from Pither and Marlowe to make it a 4-1 Winterhawks lead after two.
The Winterhawks killed off a double-minor penalty early in the third, then sorted out their own power play struggles from earlier in the game when Pither jumped on a loose puck in the Muskies zone and passed it back to Todd Hellyer.
Hellyer put a pass on a tee to Flick at the opposite point, blasting a one-timer into the top corner for the power play goal to cap off the scoring.
Flick was named The Wismer House Player of the Game with two goals and one assist, while Clayton Fritsch was strong again in the Winterhawks net, making 32 saves for the win.
The Winterhawks continue to sit in first place in the Ontario Elite Hockey League's North Division, with a record of 8-1-2 on the season.
A tough test awaits them next weekend as they'll be on a WAVE Transportation Road Trip to Elmvale to take on the second-place Elmvale Harvesters. Game time is 8:00 p.m. The game will be live streamed on the Harvesters YouTube channel.
