Winterhawks storm back in Lucknow
It wasn't exactly how it was drawn up, but the Saugeen Shores Winterhawks got a win on Saturday night in Lucknow.
The Winterhawks scored twice late in the third period to erase a two-goal deficit, before Justin Donnelly won it in overtime for a 4-3 victory over the Lucknow Lancers.
A dominant first period resulted in no scoring, with the Winterhawks outshooting Lucknow 19-8 but unable to find the back of the net, and it was 0-0 heading to the second period.
A much-improved Lucknow squad elevated their game in the second period, opening the scoring at 7:49, but Andy Fracz answered back less than two minutes later to tie the game at 1-1.
Mike Fiegehen and Rob Flick assisted on Fracz's first of the night.
The Lancers took the lead back late in the second to take a 2-1 advantage to the third period.
Although the Winterhawks again took control of the play in the third period, it was Lucknow extending their lead to 3-1 at 6:46, and suddenly the Winterhawks were staring down the barrel at their first loss to Lucknow in 15 years.
The Winterhawks ramped up the intensity as the clock ticked down, and Flick cut the Lancers lead to 3-2 at 12:28, assisted by Miles MacLean and Josh Urbshott.
The push for the equalizer continued and Fracz's notched his second of the game at 16:50 from Fiegehen and Flick to even the score at 3-3 and send the game to overtime.
The extra frame did not last long, as it took Donnelly just 45-seconds to score the unassisted winner to give the Winterhawks a 4-3 win.
Eric Peicheff made 31 saves in the Winterhawks net, while the Winterhawks directed 57 shots at the Lancer goal.
The win improves the Winterhawks record to 9-2-2, and allowed them to remain in first place in the Ontario Elite Hockey League's North Division.
The Winterhawks return home this Friday night, December 19th, when they host another Bruce County rival, the Ripley Wolves.
Game sponsor Vanderwerf's Your Independent Grocer will be hosting a hat & mitt drive, with fans encouraged to bring toques, mitts, socks, and any kind of new warm clothing. The items will be donated to local emergency services, to be distributed to our most vulnerable this winter.
Game time at The Plex on is 8:30 p.m.
