Winterhawks looking to get back in win column at Coliseum
It has been a tough stretch for the Winterhawks, but there's still time to get turned around.

What started off as a promising season has been challenged by some recent adversity.

The Saugeen Shores Winterhawks will look to shake a four-game losing streak this Friday night when they head to Southampton for their annual home game at the Coliseum when they host the Lucknow Lancers.

The Winterhawks jumped out early in the Ontario Elite Hockey League season, banking points and holding first place in the North Division into December.

However, a perfect storm of a much-tougher schedule and a number of injuries to key players followed. The result is a four-game losing streak coupled with other top teams making up games-in-hand.

Heading into this weekend, the Winterhawks find themselves in fourth place with three games to play in the regular season and still very much in the thick of things.

Of those three games remaining, two are against Lucknow (one home, one away on Jan. 24) and in what may not only be a first-round playoff preview, but a game that determines home-ice advantage, when they travel to Palmerston on Sun. Jan. 18th to face the Minto 81's.

The Winterhawks are also in the process of finalizing their playoff roster, cutting down to 28 players, as the team is required to set the final roster by this weekend.

As a result, the team has released goaltender Tristan Lewis, defencemen Jasper Akiewenzie and Matt Smallman. Defenceman Wyatt McNabb was released to Walkerton of the PJHL earlier in the season.

In addition, forward Andy Mitchell sustained a season-ending injury and is not on the playoff roster. We thank those players for their time and efforts, and especially wish Andy a speedy recovery as he's sorely missed on the ice and in the dressing room.

The Winterhawks will host the Lucknow Lancers at 8:30 p.m. on Friday at the Southampton Coliseum.
