Winterhawks win in Petrolia
The Saugeen Shores Winterhawks kept their perfect record intact with a road win over the Petrolia Squires on Friday night.

A quick burst of offence late in the 1st period was all the Winterhawks needed, as they took a tight-checking 2-1 win over the Squires.

Petrolia opened the scoring at 9:07, as the Squires John Montgomery put the puck past Winterhawks starter Eric Peicheff.

As the clock ticked down in the 1st period, the Winterhawks offence came alive, as Andy Fracz knotted the game at 1-1, with assists to Miles MacLean and Brent MacDermid at 16:20.

MacLean put the Winterhawks ahead with just 10-seconds left in the 1st, beating Squires netminder Brandon Campbell, with assists to Greg Thede and Josh Deyell.

The Winterhawks had chances to extend their lead, including a five-on-three advantage early in the 2nd period, but were unable to capitalize.

The Hawks Jamie Shoemaker was shown the gate after the power plays had ended, picking up a game misconduct for checking from behind, but the Winterhawks penalty killers came up big, killing off the minor penalty.

Petrolia turned up the pressure as the game moved into the 3rd period, and despite having only four regular defencemen dressed, the Winterhawks held off the Squires as Peicheff made 13 saves in the 3rd period to preserve the 2-1 win.

In total, Peicheff made 30 saves in the winning effort, while the Winterhawks directed 33 shots at the Petrolia net.

The win improves the 1st-place Winterhawks to 6-0-0 on the season, setting up a showdown at The Plex next weekend.

The Winterhawks will host the defending champion Clinton Radars this Friday night, November 8th, at 8:30 p.m.

Clinton entered play on Saturday night with a 4-1-0 record, their only blemish a 5-4 loss to the Winterhawks in Clinton back on October 15th.
