Hawke provides OT heroics in Ripley
Trent Hawke scored in overtime to lift the Saugeen Shores Winterhawks to a 3-2 victory over the Ripley Wolves on Saturday night.
The game started out as expected between the two rivals, as they both got their chances on the small Ripley ice.
The two teams combined for 26 shots on goal in the first period, but it wasn't until 16:03 that the Winterhawks broke through on a power play shot by Josh Hopkin, with assists to Hawke and Lauchlin Elder.
The ice tilted more in the Wolves favour in the second period, but Jeff Flagler was outstanding in the Winterhawks net yet again.
Miles MacLean was able to put the visiting Hawks up 2-0 at 6:01 of the second, with Elder and Kevin McCallion assisting, but Ripley's Cody Britton answered right back 44-seconds later to cut the lead to 2-1.
Ripley outshot the Winterhawks 17-9 in the second period, but Flagler shut the door the rest of the way to keep it a 2-1 game heading to the 3rd period.
Britton again got one by Flagler early in the 3rd period, tying the game at 2-2 just 32-seconds into the period.
Despite chances, that's where things stood at the end of regulation, forcing overtime.
Hawke's winner came as he took a Brock Pinnell feed and sniped the top corner on Ripley netminder Gatlin Burt at 3:13 of overtime to give the Winterhawks the win.
Flagler made 38 saves in tremendous performance in the Winterhawks net, taking the win.
The two-win weekend improves the Winterhawks to 2-1-1 on the season, and will be back in action with two more road games next weekend.
They will be in Shallow Lake on Friday night, October 29th, taking on the Crushers at 8:30 p.m., followed by Saturday night in Shelburne to face a tough Muskies squad at 8:00 p.m.
