It wasn't for lack of effort, but the Saugeen Shores Winterhawks made the long trip down to Petrolia on Friday night, and couldn't come away with the victory.
The Winterhawks fell 4-1 to the Squires on a night where they directed 53 shots on Petrolia goalie Brandon Campbell.
Petrolia opened the scoring at 7:57 of the first period on a goal by Jack Hackett, then made it 2-0 late in the second period on a goal by Kole Keating.
The Winterhawks peppered Campbell all night long, including 22 shots in the middle frame, but could not find the back of the net.
Keating scored again early in the third to give Petrolia a 3-0 lead before the Winterhawks finally broke through on a goal by Hunter Dubecki, assisted by Justin Donnelly and Mike Fiegehen.
Eric Peicheff made 31 saves in the Winterhawks net in an outstanding performance until departing due to injury late in the third period. Jeff Flagler took over and made five saves in relief.
Petrolia added an empty netter to make it a 4-1 final.
The Winterhawks resume the long road trip weekend with a trip to Creemore tonight [Saturday] at 7:30 p.m.
