Lakeshore Winterhawks Retro Night This Friday
The Saugeen Shores Winterhawks will pay tribute to their predecessor this Friday night at the Southampton Coliseum.

The team will wear black & white Lakeshore Winterhawks jerseys as they return to the Southampton Coliseum this Friday, January 20th, when the Winterhawks host the Lucknow Lancers.

The original Winterhawks played at the Coliseum from 1989 until 1996, starting out as part of the Ontario Hockey Association's Northern Senior A Hockey League, before jumping to the WOAA Senior Hockey League for the 1993/94 season.

"Whenever our executive discusses holding a special jersey night, the Lakeshore jerseys are always a topic of conversation," said Winterhawks President Gord Lamont. "But we ultimately decided it wouldn't be appropriate to wear the jerseys until we could do so in Southampton."

The Lakeshore Winterhawks run wasn't long, but they certainly left an impression on the community long after the team stopped playing.

"When we re-formed the team in 2007, there was really only one name the community wanted for the team," said Lamont. "The Winterhawks name had become synonymous with senior hockey in Saugeen Shores, so the choice was easy."

The jerseys will be auctioned off at a later date and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to a local charity.

The Hawks Nest bar will be open in the Coliseum's Green Room, and the stands will be licensed during the game. Alcoholic beverages will not be permitted in the front lobby or dressing room hallway.

Not lost in the nostalgia is the valuable two points up for grabs at the Coliseum on Friday night with just two weeks left in the regular season.

The Winterhawks will enter play with a 12-4-1 record, in fourth place in the jam-packed WOAA standings, one point behind the Ripley Wolves, and two points ahead of the Tavistock Royals, who are nipping at their heels in fifth place.

Second place Minto 81's are currently two points ahead of the Winterhawks with one game in hand.

The Winterhawks also have one game in hand on Ripley, with a road game in Ripley looming on January 28th likely to decide the race between the two clubs.

Currently, the Winterhawks hold tiebreakers over Minto and Ripley, should they finish with identical records, while Tavistock holds the tiebreaker on the Winterhawks.

Game time on Friday night in Southampton is 8:30 p.m.
